As a first-generation Chinese immigrant and a passionate home cook, my journey to founding Ummi began with a personal struggle and a mission to change perceptions.
When I moved to the United States as a child, I quickly noticed the fear and stigma surrounding the use of MSG in recipes and restaurants. Pop culture and mainstream media had unfairly portrayed msg (commonly associated with Asian cuisine) as a type of poison. This negative portrayal made me feel ashamed of the food I grew up with, leading me to reject my cultural heritage.


However, as I grew older, I started seeing newer research that debunked the myths surrounding MSG. These studies revealed that the fears were unfounded and that MSG was, in fact, safe to use.
I also learned that with my family history of hypertension, I needed to be extremely careful with the amount of salt I ate. So I started experimenting with using MSG as a replacement for salt, as it contains only 1/3 the amount of sodium. This change not only improved my health but also made my food tastier.
Realizing the potential benefits of MSG, I felt a strong calling to share this knowledge and delicious seasoning with others. I decided to make it my life mission to bring MSG to kitchens everywhere, promoting healthy eating and combating the fear people have with this seasoning.
